Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel face challenging season starter in Sweden

The long-awaited start to the 2020 FIA World Rallycross season kicked off at the world-famous rallycross track in Holjes, Sweden, today and round 1 brought plenty of race action and challenges with it for the Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel.

Following rain on Friday and Saturday morning’s free practice, the first qualifier of the 2020 season got off to a start with the rain slowly stopping, resulting in quickly changing track conditions.

Q1 P14 / Q2 P14 / Q3 P12

Despite having put down the fastest time in free practice, technical issues for Andreas Bakkerud saw him finish 4th in his first qualifier having not been able to get off the line. He raced into 2nd behind Timerzyanov in his second qualifier but engine issues meant he couldn’t entirely make up for lost time and had him in P13 following the first 2 qualifiers.

Pushing hard in Q3 for a last chance to get into the semi-finals, Bakkerud put down a good start and raced into the front, taking the checkered flag. An ever-evolving and quickly drying track meant Bakkerud’s time wasn’t quite enough to make it into the semi-finals with him missing out on a spot by a point.

“It was a tricky day for me for sure - we had a great start to the day putting down some good pace but then the technical issue in the first and second qualifier put me on the back foot and I didn’t manage to win enough time back in Q3. It’s tough with only three qualifiers and the entire round in one day as every issue has an even bigger impact and it’s super tough to fight back. Now we have to look to tomorrow and make up for it then.”, Andreas Bakkerud commented.

Q1 P11
Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel’s Liam Doran took a promising start in race 4 of the 1st qualifier but faced disaster as the prop shaft broke in the final lap, causing the brakes to go and resulting in him crashing into the barrier. Damage to the GCK Megane R.S. RX was so significant that it meant the end of racing for Doran today with the pressure on for the team to try and turn the car around for round 2 of the Championship tomorrow.

“Today didn’t really work out for me. We had a pretty good draw which put me in a good position in regards to track evolution and despite being at the back, my time was looking quite good and would’ve put me in a good position for the rest of the race but in the last lap, we lost the propshaft which then took out the brakes, so I lost all drive and the brakes at the same time, which resulted in me ending up in the barrier causing further damage to the Megane. The damage was too severe to continue and the team are now working hard in the hope to fix it for round 2 tomorrow. I’m super bummed the first day of the season ended in this way but that’s life and we have to focus on tomorrow now.”, Liam Doran added.
