FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
RD1: Holjes - SWEDEN
UNKORRUPTED race into semi-final
at Holjes RX
The 2020 FIA World Rallycross Season kicked off today in Sweden with what has become known as the ‘magic weekend’ at the world-famous rallycross track in Holjes. Despite running behind closed doors, the excitement was palpable in the paddock as the cars lined up for the morning’s first qualifier in more than 8 months. Following a new race weekend format running one Championship round on Saturday and one on Sunday, newly established team UNKORRUPTED introduced Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit and Lithuanian Rokas Baciuska in a new evolution of the GCK Clio R.S. RX.
GUERLAIN CHICHERIT - P16
Q1 P16 / Q2 P16 / Q3 P14
Mixed weather conditions and a quickly evolving track greeted the team for the very first qualifiers of the 2020 season, which saw Chicherit finish his 1st and 2nd qualifier race in 4th. Putting down a clean run in his third qualifier, Guerlain finished in 2nd but was unable to recover enough time for a spot in the semi-finals finishing in p16 overall.
“It’s been a tough race day for me. We made some mistakes with the initial set up and were struggling with grip as a result. Certainly not what I wanted for the first round of the Championship but at least we have a double header here in Sweden and will turn up tomorrow ready for another fight. It’s time to focus, review all the data and push hard tomorrow.”, commented Chicherit
ROKAS BACIUSKA - P6 SEMI-FINAL
Q1 P12 / Q2 P10 / Q3 P13
UNKORRUPTED teammate Rokas Baciuska raced his way into the semi-final having put down increasingly competitive pace and performance. Following a p3 in the first qualifier, he finished his second qualifier in 2nd. The final qualifier of the first round in Sweden had Baciuska race his way into fourth despite the car catching fire as the turbo broke on the last lap, putting him in p11 overall and bagging him a spot in the semi-final.
Having turned the car around in time for the semi-final, he fought his way through a lot of contact in the first corner but another issue with the turbo led to him having to retire in 6th place.
“We fought hard today to race our way into the semi-final despite quite a few challenges along the way and a lot of adaptations to the changing conditions. We still need to work through some changes and fix things so we can really charge ahead and get consistently good pace, so I’m ready to take on the field tomorrow.”, Baciuska added.
